My practice is both a comment on and a continuum of the conceptual ideology of jazz, an honouring of the deep radical legacy of its experimentation, of hybrid modernist forms, of wit, of riff — the turning of a phrase onto itself.
Using the “auto reverse” or direction button on a Sony Walkman, ARS is a
series of sound works forcing a seamlessness between sides A and B — one that is self-aware, that lavishes, ever so briefly, in the crude sound of transitions. The source for these pieces is a 1969 Elvin Jones record titled “Poly-Currents”. It was re-released on cassette tape in 1985. Ironically, this low-tech sound artwork plays back on a sleek high-tech contemporary system. The idea is to convey the notion of intentional feedback-- the hiss and hum of the tape player itself – an audible texture we no longer experience since the advent of the MP3.
These are ephemeral, like the performance that gave rise to the musical data contained on the tape itself. These works attempt to “play” audiotape outside of an apparatus, addressing notions of silence and movement, recreating a live performance from a recorded performance. In this instance giving back the avant-garde essence back to the 'jazz' of Kenny G.
